Can you relate to the image of a room full of boxes?  Have you been giving yourself excuses to avoid going into the messy areas of your home?

As a professional organizer I have come across lots of storage spaces in clients’ homes, often overlooked, and things get accumulated.  Clients often contact me for help as they can no longer find what they are looking for.

It is important to have a designated storage space in your home, but at the same time, it is important to make sure that things are organized for easy retrieval.

Why Do We Need To Declutter Storage Spaces?

Attics, basements and garages are long-term storage spaces in your home, but can also become the worst points for clutter. It can get overwhelming if you let things build up and not have a system in place.

Having a neat and organized storage space will save you time.  You know exactly where to find the holiday decorations or the extra serving tray.  When you can find things, there is less stress.  Want to know how to get your stuff organized?  Here are some tips:

Tips for Decluttering and Organizing Your Storage Spaces

  • Create a plan – figure out what goes where and how to maximize the space
  • Start small – don’t chew more than you can bite. Otherwise, you will get discouraged and give up.
  • Sort and group items into categories.
  • Declutter. Declutter.
  • Why keep something that you don’t use and haven’t used it in years? It is clutter that is taking up prime real estate.
  • How long have you been keeping those “just in case” items? Time to let them go.
  • Clearly label bins and boxes.
  • Good enough is the new perfect. It’s okay if your storage space is not Instagram ready.

More Organized, More Time

Want to spend more time enjoying your home and less time stressing about it?  Then it’s time to stop running away from the storage spaces and take action.

With some careful planning, you can make your storage spaces work in your favour again.
